The Far North region spans the largest geographical area of any other region in South Australia. The region comprises the Local Government Areas of Port Augusta, Flinders Ranges, Roxby Downs, Coober Pedy, Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara and Maralinga Tjarutja Lands, as well as the unincorporated areas of SA. The estimated resident population of the Far North region is approximately 28,800 [Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2017, Outback Communities Authority website].
From the north to southern borders, the region spans close to 900kms, and reaches 4 of the State’s neighbouring borders. The Far North region has long attracted tourists looking for Outback adventure. Desert landscapes and ancient mountain ranges inspire visitors to experience many diverse activities including scenic flights, underground accommodation experiences and swimming in naturally occurring hot springs. The region also boasts the impressive Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre and the Flinders Ranges; South Australia’s largest mountain range and home to Wilpena Pound and the Aboriginal Dreaming Trail.
Port Augusta is the largest township within the region, with a population of 14,267 (ABS, 2017) and acts as a service hub for the region. The Far North is well-known for its mineral exploration, tourism and defence industries. Agricultural is another key industry within the region, including large scale pastoral properties further north.
